Training News
July 2007
July 20, 2007:

I packed up my clothes, wetsuit, googles, and blender. Packed the '99 Nissan Altima and said goodbye to my family and my dog. Drove across the country to the west coast.

I decided to move out here for a few reasons. 1 mainly training for the English Channel. I've found a coach, she has swam the channel herself. But there will be more to come on that...

Training for the swim will be great out this way. I will be able to surround myself with channel swimmers that are as enthusiastic as I along with getting the training that I need all year round. I only have 1 year to go and it's time to buckle down.

Toes in the sand and a Corona in hand,

Davey G.

Gaining Weight Part I.

Well. It's time to pack on the pounds. Add the spare tire. And put some junk in my trunk. I have overlooked this major detail long enough but needing to gain some serious weight for the swim is underway. The reason is for protection from the cold water. The layer of subcutaneous fat (Blubber really) will protect my vital organs from the coldness of the English Channel. For any of you who are interested in my pre-weight gain stats...Here we go:

Height- 5'9''
Weight- 162lbs
Body fat- 8%

This area of training should be fun. Sounds a bit disgusting but I've already had volunteering to assist me with the weight gaining process, thanks Phil and Matt. I've had some hilarious looks from friends and family when I told them I need to be close to 200lbs. So I should be swimming the English Channel looking more like Jabba the Hut.

August 13, 2007:

Hard to believe I have a year until I swim. Last year at this time it was still just an idea. I have just started training open water here in San Clemente and trying to get used to swimming in the ocean. Yesterday I swam about 3 miles while Scott and Matt paddle boarded along side. I am still not comfortable swimming in the ocean, it kind of freaks me out. Yesterday I realized that you must respect the ocean, because you don't belong there, it's like being a guest----- Thank mother nature for inviting you, clean up after yourself and maybe she'll invite you back.

Things cool to swim with: Dolphins, other people, bright colored fish.

Things not so cool to swim with: Jellyfish, sharks, sea kelp (feels likes swimming through a cabbage patch)
