Training News - June & July 2006 |
June 25, 2006:
Got out on the bike with Matt for a quick 30 miles.
Depending on weather, tomorrow starts Lake Erie open water swimming,
hopefully that will go well. If anyone wants to kayak and throw
sandwiches
at me and make sure I don't get hit by a boat that would be much
appreciated.
June 29, 2006:
There is a bacteria warning in Lake Erie from all the rain water draining into it. So I decided to train in the pool so I wouldn't wake up with a third eye one morning. It's funny when the news anchor makes it a point to let all of Cleveland know that our Lake is wicked-nasty.
July 3, 2006:
Today was my first open water experience in Lake Erie. I swam around 4 miles at a good pace and Phil was there to keep the jet skis away. The coastguard pulled us over and asked us if we were swimming to Canada, Phil replied "no, that's tomorrow." The newspaper said that any bacteria level over 235 is swim at your own risk and yesterday it was over 2000, so I may swim in the pool for a few days.
July 12, 2006:
I am traveling to the Outerbanks, North Carolina for a week with Brian and Seth. Since I don't want to be eaten by any sharks, open water swimming may be out of the question. Also, I will not be biking down there either, seeing as how last time I was there I was hit by a car. So I will be running at least an hour everyday and surfing waves on the beach. Meet me at Tortugas for a crabcake sandwich.
July 16, 2006:
The outer banks are great but the water has been freezing with temps
ranging from 55-60 degrees. Which is a little disheartening
considering the fact that I could spend about 1 hour bodysurfing before
my hands and feet were purple. Other than that, the water was warmer
today but plagued with millions of jellyfish. I hate jellyfish.
Training has not stopped but just taken a different form. Brian and I
ran a half marathon on friday night. Catch you on the flipside
July 20, 2006:
Today I ran about 8 miles in a thunderstorm and then met some old friends to swim in the Lake. Getting back in Lake Erie was fantastic, the water was warm and as flat as glass. It rained during the swim and that was a cool experience, I would highly recommend it. The weekend of August 13 I'll be swimming across Grand Lake St. Mary's out in Hicksville, USA. I think its about 8-10 miles and my cousin and his buddies will be driving my grandparent's pontoon boat and getting hammered while I swim, let's just hope I don't get run over. I also found out there is a swim to Canada every year, 26 miles, 3 people usually do it. Something to look forward too.
